Blues Awards


Waikato Diocesan Sports Blues Awards Criteria


Students are asked to fill in a sports awards nomination form during the year so that we have the correct information about all students sporting success.  

Blues Committee

Sports Managers - Mrs Anna White, Mrs Jacqui Sutton and Mrs Jane Schilov                

SENIOR SPORTS BLUES
Candidates for the award of a Sports Blue must have proven to be role models in their sport. In addition to this they must have:

  1. Consistently displayed outstanding ability, commitment to their chosen sporting activity;

  2. Shown outstanding sportsmanship 

  3. Be in year 11, 12 or 13

  4. Must be a member of a school team that participates in inter-schools competitions

  5. Students must meet the following criteria as it relates to their sport

Athletics, Cross Country, Cycling, Triathlon/Duathlon, Swimming, Gymsports

  • 1st in the WBOP Individual Event for their Sport

  • 1st in the NISS Individual Relay/Team Event for their Sport

  • Top 3 in the NISS Individual Event for their Sport

  • Top 3 in the NZSS Relay/Team Event for their Sport

  • Top 5 in the NZSS Individual Event for their Sport

Badminton, Basketball, Football, Futsal, Lacrosse, Rugby Sevens, Touch, Water Polo, Volleyball

  • The Student must have been selected into and competed for a regional A representative team.

  • Or their School Team came top 3 at NZSS Event (at the top Tournament)

  • The results of representative tournaments will be taken into consideration when determining Blues Awards.

 Cricket, Cheerleading, Inline Hockey, Tennis, Squash

  • The Student must have been selected into and competed for a regional A representative team or played in a regional team that won the National or International Tournament.

  • Or their School Team came top 3 at NZSS Event (at the Top Tournament)

  • The results of representative tournaments will be taken into consideration when determining Blues Awards.

Hockey and Netball

  • The Student must have been selected into and competed for a regional A representative team.

  • Or their School Team came top 5 at NZSS Event (at the top Tournament)

  • The results of representative tournaments will be taken into consideration when determining Blues Awards.

Rowing

  • Winning an A Final at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships or placing in the top five in an A Final at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships.

Equestrian

  • Team or individual win at a WSS or WBOP event

  • Team or individual placing in top three at NISS events

  • Individual top 3 placing in the Secondary Schools Show Hunter Series

Skiing/Snowboarding

  • 1st at the WBOP Champs

  • Top 3 at the NISS Event

All School Sports

  • Selected and competed for a New Zealand National Team.

The Blues Committee considers all nominations in relation to each individual sport, to the standard and level of competition within the sport and criteria for qualifying and competing in ‘A’ representative teams in the top tier/A grade competition at tournaments.  Players who receive a Blues Award are clearly recognised as ‘top’ in their sport. Blues Awards will be presented at the Sports Awards Dinner each Year. Year 13 Blues recipients will also be awarded the Senior Sports Shield

Junior Blues
These have the same criteria as for the Senior Sports Blues. Junior Blues are awarded to students in Years 9 and 10 only.

Final decisions are at the discretion of the Blues Committee and they reserve the right to gain additional guidance/support from Sport Waikato in deciding Blues recipients.


Hall of Fame Criteria


At the annual Dio Sports Awards any Year 13 who has been selected and competed* for New Zealand (in an age group U16 and above or open, not including selection for squad teams) will be inducted i.e. have her photograph hung in the hall of fame. 


* To be inducted you must have competed for New Zealand. The only exception to this is being named in a ‘Paper Team’. This is a team that does not have the opportunity to compete. They have been named based on their performances at a NZSS Championship event.
