Dio Students in NZSSSO
We are so proud to recognise two Year 12 Students Ashley Koo and Clara Lynch who have been selected to be a part of the 2021 New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra course which will run in the April term break in Christchurch.

Ashley (on Cello) and Clara (on Violin) have both been very significant parts of the extra curricular music programs here at Waikato Dio and they both were selected to be a part of the 2020 NZSSSO which unfortunately didn't go ahead due to COVID-19. They had to re-audition to be a part of the 2021 course.

The NZSSSO offers a valuable opportunity for some of New Zealand’s top secondary school orchestral musicians to represent their school, and receive the opportunity to experience playing in a full Symphony Orchestra. The course runs for six days, during which students participate in a variety of practical sessions – culminating in two public performances. Each year the standard reached has remained high, with full-scale orchestral works being performed. It is widely regarded as a significant training ground for young players aspiring to membership of the New Zealand Youth Orchestra and ultimately to a career as a professional musician.

The 2021 NZSSSO course will be conducted by Timothy Carpenter and the programme includes
  • Sabre Dance – Aram Khachaturian (Arranged for Percussion)
  • A Bugle Will Do – Anthony Ritchie
  • Symphony No.2 in D major, op.73 – Johannes Brahms
  • Concerto for Flute – Aram Khachaturian
Congratulations Ashley and Clara for your success and we wish you well in the course next year.
