Latest Update from School Sports NZ

posted 23 Apr 2020, 18:10 by Debbie Stevens

Please read the latest update from School Sports NZ announcing that due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the national calendar of sanctioned events will be further suspended until 20 July, the beginning of Term 3. This will have an immediate impact on all Winter sports codes.

We support School Sport NZ in recognising the importance of returning to normal activities as soon as possible and the crucial role that school sport plays in contributing to the physical, mental and social health of our young people, while also supporting Government guidelines in keeping NZ and our people safe from Covid-19.

Sadly, we also have to share the following information regarding Secondary Schools' Football.

Following School Sport NZ's announcement, New Zealand Secondary Schools' Football regretfully advises that our 2020 Football Tournaments will not proceed in the format that they have in the past.

Our NZSS Football Tournaments currently scheduled have been cancelled. Some of the factors considered before making this unprecedented and difficult decision included:
- The ongoing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 Alert Status restrictions on non-essential travel, mass gatherings, physical distancing
- Schools core focus to be on academic/curriculum given the disruption
- Inability to complete qualification process/games given the proposed late start of the season.
- Financial pressure on families and school to send students to national tournaments following the economic downturn caused by COVID-19
- Current uncertainty of availability and affordability of air travel
- Availability of volunteers, given that many would have taken leave during the weeks of lockdown

NZSS Football will continue to work with School Sport NZ to explore more regional opportunities possibly in the Winter tournament week window should the situation allow and should schools want to take part.

We know this news is disappointing for many of our students, coaches, managers, and supporters. Living our Sports Vision 'Preparing confident, resourceful and resilient young women to lead healthier and active lifestyles' has never been more important and we encourage you to stay healthy and active as it is so good for the mind and body.

To support you in this, our sports office has set up a Sports Google Classroom and they are adding new information regularly. There is specific information for our codes as well as general information to guide you in some fun workouts, skills, and drills. Please use code 7kutznf to join up.
