Dio Students Selected For Prestigious National Science Camp

posted 17 Mar 2016, 13:47 by Debbie Stevens
Waikato Diocesan School students Nikita Lyons (Year 13) and Chelsea Lin (Year 12) have both been awarded a Silver Award in the New Zealand International Biology Olympiad (NZIBO) selection exam. As a result of this outstanding effort, they qualify to attend the Training & Selection Camp to be held in the next school holidays. Nikita and Chelsea were two of just 16 students selected, all with marks of 49 or greater in the exam.

The camp will run from April 17 until April 25 and will be held at the University of Waikato, the University of Auckland, and the Institute of Natural Sciences (Massey University), with support from the University of Auckland and the University of Otago. During the camp, students will sit a three-hour practical exam and a three-hour theory exam that covers all the material in the IBO syllabus. On the basis of performance in the assessments and personal attributes, a team of four students will then be selected to represent New Zealand at the prestigious International Biology Olympiad being held in Vietnam in July. In 2015, Nikita was selected to represent New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad in Denmark, bringing home a bronze medal.

NZIBO fosters interest, participation, and excellence in biology through the participation of secondary school students in the New Zealand Biology Olympiad Programme. The programme provides University level education in Biology to those students selected to participate in the online tutorial programme.
